GUIDED BY EXPERTS
Our journey is led by experienced guides from Basecamp Adventures, trained in outdoor safety, wilderness first aid, and emergency response. They’ll be with you every step of the way to assess conditions, provide guidance, and ensure your experience is both safe and rewarding.
Weather Awareness
Late October in Fiordland means you should be prepared for anything from sunshine to snow. Expect:
- Rapid temperature shifts (0–5°C at night, up to 15°C during the day)
- Strong winds, heavy rain, and limited visibility in exposed areas
- Possible late-season snow on higher sections
Our team will monitor weather forecasts closely and make real-time decisions to adjust the route or pace if needed.
What You Need to Bring
Safety starts with the right gear. You’ll need:
- Waterproof outer layers (Jacket & pants)
- Thermal base layers
- Insulated mid-layer (Fleece or down)
- Warm hat and gloves
- Sleeping bag
- Tent
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots
- Headlamp or torch (In case of low visibility or emergencies)
A full gear list will be provided upon registration.
TRACK CONDITIONS
While the Kepler Track is well-maintained, sections include:
- Steep ascents and descents
- Narrow alpine ridgelines
- Slippery boardwalks or exposed tree roots
- Remote terrain with limited reception or access to help
You’ll need to maintain awareness, follow guide instructions, and pace yourself throughout the hike.
Emergency Preparedness
Each group carries:
- First aid kits
- Communication devices (satellite or radio)
- Emergency response plans
In the unlikely event of an emergency, our guides are equipped to respond quickly and coordinate support.
Group Responsibility
We hike as a team. All participants must:
- Stay within sight of the group
- Follow guide instructions at all times
- Communicate clearly about discomfort, injuries, or concerns
- Respect others' pace and support a safe group dynamic
Safety on the Kepler isn’t just about gear—it’s about mindset, teamwork, and preparation. With the right approach, this track offers one of the most spectacular and rewarding experiences in Aotearoa.
